Follow the instructions below if you want to play or understand the process of playing Knurl
Here is a What to pack list to help you.
Make sure to charge the battery , the bow and the wireless transmitter.
Here is an indication of a standard set up of the instrument
First, I make sure every equimpent I am using is assembled and working (that could be your computer, visuals, lights, your mic, camera, you named it!)
When I remove Knurl from the case, I check if every piece, screw or acessory is correct and in place. Double check the belt of the instrument if you are planing to play standing
Tune your Knurl, I use this an tunning app to tune the strings. Use this tuning template diagram or feel welcome to use however you like it!
With Knurl you can choose to play visualizing its performance with a computer or with its tiny OLED screen, positioned on the side of the frame of the instrument.
With the computer, you can connect it and automate the instrument for interactive projects and performances. Bare in mind that the connection is stable up to 3 meters from the computer. We recommend this approach only to musicians experienced with programming skils or experienced with interactive projects. Please read this instruction in advance.
If you choose to play only with the OLED screen, you need to remember what each string will trigger and the system application of the instrument. Read this brief manual beforehand and print this guideline to help you when playing the strings.
Turn on the battery and wait for 50 seconds, your patch should run on the boot and you will see "Hello Knurl" on the the OLED screen. After this proces, you can turn on your bow. Bare in mind the batery of the bow holds for max 1 hour.
When playing with the computer:
To better visualize the performance, Download this TouchOSC patch here. TouchOSC is an app I use to visualize the performance of the instrument. Once downloaded, discover your IP adress and double check at your Knurl patch your ip is the same as the one descrtibed on the patch, usually, 192.168.30.2.
Turn off either by pressing 2 times your battery button.
When playing with the computer:
Disconnect from the Touch osc. Turn off either by powering off your bela or pressing the power off button on the bela interface.
This is an experimental instrument! A lot of thing are in still in development. Be open and flexible if things don't go on your way. You can help the process of improving the instrument by sending me your feedback by email.
The wireless connection with the computer doesn't have a broader range. Depending of the space or venue, the connection can be stable up to 3-4 meters. If there is too much wireless signal, you might faced some more often missconnection. If you are using ipad, you might experience some instability when changing your page, for example.
This findings and research were only possible thanks to the musicians Katerina Papakostaki, Lucija Gregov , Jan Willem Troost and me, who dedicated a lot of time and effort to test the instrument, its application and process.
If you are becoming a professional Knurl player, you might want to implement your own sound design, hack the instrument and develop your own projects with it. I am preparing a documentation for you, slowly shared here:
