Values
The intention of unifying a creative process with a collective practice on Knurl brings an important message to its musician and listener: to develop a musical idea can be part of a collaborative and circular process where participants learn to exchange their roles and support each other. Sound can represent a physical change towards current topics, such as globalization or sustainability. Even more than that, an artistic performance can bring the cause to an emotional and engaged level between its public. Knurl lab includes the application of those areas:
results
3.1. Digital and cultural heritage
As science goes forward by the development of new tools, music instruments can also open a new chapter into music history when using and inventing new tools. Realizing that Knurl isn’t only an instrument, but also an interface, a platform and part of a hardware, we are motivated to solidify those results, testing their applications into tools that also represent cultural heritage by playing other instruments, technologies and musicians, such as live coders, analogue synthesizers, sound installations and folk instruments.
3.2. Promotion of artwork production and exchange
New repertoire for cello and electronics in collaborations with other instruments will be made and presented in International music festivals, conferences and artistic residences. The intention is to explore how instruments and technologies can create new bounds, new territory and alternative approaches for its users, which in turn creates new forms of relationship between audience and performer.
3.3. Understanding audience engagement
One of the main key findings of this experience was about realizing the potential of technology engaging us to interact without communication. This project also reflects the potential of this tool for removing the barrier of feeling exposed towards an active participation. The intention is to apply some of these findings and explore even more how instruments and technologies can satisfy new presentation formats involving interactivity between its users.
3.4. Application of sustainable practices
The music market lacks references where tools and practices promote a wealthier and cooperative relationship with their environment and community. Our intention is to apply sustainable practices into an instrument by:
Customization of a device that captures sound output and converts it into energy storage. This device is developed for the performance (Sound energy harvest) but it will also become a prototype to allow the instrument to be electrically charged by its own sound. This performance will also be an artwork reflecting ambiental conscientization.
The exploration of renewable or biodegradable materials pursuing circular economy for application involving acoustics.
Stimulating circular economy and fair label conditions for companies and organizations.
3.5. Grounding new models for the music industry.
Knurl can be a reference to stimulate awareness into the current music industry, since it can connect with a diverse range of research and innovative areas, but also dialogue with important global issues (Sustainability, Mobility, Inclusion, Automation). New designs also bring solutions and dialogue that aligns with new values of the XXI century, such as Shareability, Customization, Autonomy and Integration. This research aims to research models and tools that could potentially help the environment and human development.
